Do you ever wonder why we pray and live in Jesus’ name?
We pray over our food, pray for safety, pray for health… all in Jesus’ Name.
We know there is power in his name.
We know we are to gather together in his name.
In the gospels, Jesus often reminded us to ask, to pray, and to live in his name.
But as we move into the writings of Paul and look at the early church, they were continually needing reminded of how to live in Jesus’ name.
Why did they need this reminder?
When Paul was writing these books, Christians believed that Christ’s return would happen at any moment. They expected Him to come back within their lifetime.
They didn’t feel a need for teachings about how they should be living because they didn’t expect to be living for very long! They fully believed that Jesus was coming back soon!
We too know that He is coming soon. Yet, for the early church, the fact that He hadn’t returned was causing some trouble for them.
In the waiting, they needed instruction on how to keep the faith, on how to persevere in their faith, on how to treat those in the faith and how to treat those who were still unbelieving.
They needed guidance to live their lives in Jesus Name while waiting for the return of Christ.
Repeatedly, in many different ways, Paul encouraged them to keep going, keep living, keep doing ALL in Jesus’ Name.
“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17 NIV
Here we are, many years later and so do we. The epistles written by Paul give us some of that direction and guidance.
Paul writes about how we should act out of our love for the God who saved us from sin. He helps us know how to live as those who are children of God.
I read a quote that says, “Rather than a directory of rules, Paul leaves an important principle with his readers: Everything they do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” (NIBC, Patzia)
In everything we do
That sounds like something we should ALL keep in the front of our minds as we go about our days.
We pray in his name because he is God.
We ask in his name because we know his name is powerful.
We live in his name because we love him, want to serve him and are waiting for his return.
Romans 12:1 tell us, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.”
When we view how we live, how we relate to others, how we act when no one is looking, how we instagram, how we text, how we… you fill in the blank, we have to remember this basic principle from scripture to do it ALL for the Lord.
Do everything in his name.
Our marriage, our workplace, our family, our kids, the people we come in contact with every day… Do it ALL in Jesus Name.
He is coming soon. And while we wait, we are called to live lives that are holy and pleasing to God.
Are you doing it all in Jesus Name?
