Fear is such a crippling thing in our lives and thankfully God placed many specific verses about fear in His Word.
As we read these verses about FEAR, our eyes can be even more open to what fear says about us. We learn there is healthy fear and unhealthy fear.
Unhealthy fear is paralyzing in its effects on our lives. It can stop you from doing what you have been created to do and cause you to miss opportunities to be used of God.
Not only is that kind of fear crippling, but it speaks.
It speaks to God.
Unhealthy fear says to God, “I don’t trust you enough to help me through this.” or “I don’t believe that your word is true and I need to try to fix this on my own without You.”
On the other hand, we realize in many verses about fear, that we actually need healthy doses of it in our view of God and who He is!
Healthy fear tells God that we are in awe of Him, that we understand His greatness and that we respect His ultimate power.
Healthy fear says, “I trust You because You are God.”
Now, there are normal fears. When Abby wasn’t breathing well because of croup, I was scared for her. When Annalise was showing signs of broken blood vessels and the doctors weren’t sure why, I was nervous, scared and lost sleep. When we first heard of my brother in law’s accident in the middle of the night and didn’t know for sure what happened to him, I was very scared. When I found out that my friend, Christa, was going in for a very risky brain surgery, I was scared.
Fear can be a normal part of living life because the reality is that scary things happen to us!
It is when that fear takes root, when it begins to determine what you do with your day or how you spend your time on earth that it becomes something that can grow sin in our hearts.
When normal fear stops you in your tracks and changes your course away from what God has for you, it quickly becomes a sin and a snare that Satan wants to keep you in throughout your life.
It is that sinful, unhealthy fear that speaks of the condition of our hearts and what we truly believe about the power of our God.
Verses About Fear
Proverbs 29:25 says, “Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.”
Fearing what men can do to us, what life situations can cause to happen will ensnare us. It will hold us captive until we allow God into that fear and ask Him to heal us.
Proverbs 14:27 says, “The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death.”
Having respect for who God is and remembering what He is capable of doing in our lives will save us from the snares of sin. When we choose to trust God and not fear life, we are making ourselves available to be used by God in amazing ways.
Proverbs 18:10 says, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run to it and are safe.”
Choosing to trust God in the face of great fear speaks of trust, love and full dependence on our God as Savior.
Learning verses about fear, finding ways to trust, getting to know who God is and being able to recognize healthy fear from unhealthy fear are ways we can navigate this difficult part of our lives.
